Dream Time
First Personal Game Concept Exploration Script Final
My name is Philip, and this is my first personal game idea.
• Who are you & why you chose this topic? - My concept is a game about sleeping and dreaming and how it can distort everyday life. - Games are an interesting way to make stories about life experiences interactive. - I chose to focus on the subject of dreams because that would give my game some substance rather just focussing on real life. I will research web pages and videos on dreams as well as personal games.
• What the concept is and who it is for (what does it communicate and to whom?) - It is an autobiographical game, and it is somewhat abstract. - It is an experience for a broad range of people as dreams are relevant to everyone as the game is intended to be child friendly. - It is a game for anyone who is interested in personal games, dreaming and everyday life. This can range from older children to adults.
• The execution details: help the audience picture what a completed version of this project would look like - The experience I intend to communicate is how dreams can affect everyday life and vice versa. - I want to create a game on ‘Bitsy’ to interact with an environment focussed on dreaming.
• What did you learn from this exploration? Are there risks or challenges? - Games like ‘LSD: Dream Emulator’, ‘Day Dreamin’ Davey’, ‘Silent Hill’ and ‘Mario & Luigi: Dream Team’ demonstrate this experience. - From these games I can make games horrific like a nightmare, transition from reality to a dream state and distort everyday experiences like psychedelics. - My concept is different as it focusses on real life and dreaming as an everyday experience which is more personal to myself.
• Is it a project you could take forward? How? - The game can be scoped to fit within the timeframe of assignment 3. - Regarding resources, I have access to some online programs such as Bitsy and Twine, but I am still unaware about others at this stage. - Probably about a week of work is required to realise the concept.
• The presentation is an audio-visual format; what can you show rather than tell? - To communicate the intended experience mechanics such as moving and interacting with characters and objects will be used, aesthetics such as colour choices, animation, and transitions as well as a narrative based on dreaming and sleeping. - Possibly in text driven story format the experience could be told more efficiently.
